This women's health short course focusses on key issues related to antenatal care in general practice that every GP might encounter. As antenatal care is a large and important area of medicine, this short course has focussed on some recent updates on a range of diverse topics including gestational diabetes management, update on the use of Rh (D) immunoglobulin in Australia, exercise and physiotherapy in pregnancy and finding reliable information on the use of medicines in pregnancy. The short course allows participants to collaborate with their peers within relevant case studies and provides several useful printable reference tools for future use. There is also a very valuable audio contribution from 3 women who have kindly agreed to share their antenatal experiences.

Understand and have a ready reference tool about the developmental stages of the embryo and foetus during pregnancy
Be able to confidently assess a woman in the first trimester of pregnancy and appropriately counsel on the availability, limitations, risks and benefits of antenatal testing
Be able to counsel women and their partners in the event of an unwanted pregnancy
Be aware of the legislative environment in Australian States and Territories regarding termination of pregnancy
Have a checklist to refer to when considering assessment of risk in a woman's antenatal care
Know the differential diagnoses for and be able to investigate PV bleeding in the first trimester

Be able to assess the risks and benefits of medication use in a pregnant woman and the potential impact on the mother and foetus at different stages of pregnancy
Be able to recognise and appropriately manage a pregnant patient with an exacerbation of asthma
Have access to patient education tools on exercises and physiotherapy during and after pregnancy
Be able to access and interpret the Australian Red Cross Blood Service poster 'Guidelines for the use of Rh (D) immunoglobulin' and test your knowledge on the recommended use of Rh (D) immunoglobulin in pregnant women with Rh (D) negative blood group
Know the criteria recognised by the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) for diagnosis of and the principles of management for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
Have access to and be able to utilise the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of consumer and carer education and have access to a patient handout containing a list of useful resources and websites about depression and anxiety
