PBS essentials (GL-5011)

• Know the roles and functions of Medicare Australia
• Access information regarding Medicare Australia, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), and relevant State legislation
• Understand the purpose and philosophy of the PBS
• Understand the process of drug listing from research to the pharmacist’s claim
• Enhance your navigation and understanding of the Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefit
• Be aware of the costs of the PBS to the Australian Government
• Understand how much your patients will pay for the medicines that you prescribe
• Access information on PBS medicines' costs
• Identify possible sources of non-compliance in your clinical practice
• Become familiar with Medicare Australia activities to identify and intervene with patients involved in misusing the PBS (non-compliance)

The PBS and your prescribing (GL-5012)

• Have access to the available information sources on how to comply with state and Commonwealth legislation relating to your requirements when writing prescriptions
• Generate a valid Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) prescription
• Based on PBS subsidised indications, recognise when a Non-PBS prescription is required
• Reflect on your current prescribing habits
• Know how to provide your patient with the appropriate information and support when taking PBS medicines overseas
• Have access to information on health services for patients from countries with Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with Australia
• Know how to appropriately prescribe medicines for patients of Residential Aged Care Facilities and private hospitals
